about

An incantation for rain that draws from the Mexican alabanza, Dominican salves, and Puerto Rican aguinaldo musical traditions. A song of praise and gratefulness to Tlalok, the Mexica/Aztec spiritual energy that brings about rain, and San Ysidro Labrador, his counterpart in Catholicism. This song is rooted in the yearly community celebration that takes place in honor of San Ysidro and Tlalok in the South Valley of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

lyrics

Lyrics in Spanish original / English translation

San Ysidro Labrador (3x) / St. Isidore the Laborer (3x)
Es Tlalok, mi señor / Is Tlalok, my holy one

Le canto la alabanza / I sing the alabanza
Que yo le debía / That I owed
A Tlalok, mi señor / Tlalok, my holy one
Y a San Ysidro Labrador / And St. Isidore the Laborer

Bendice la semilla / Bless the seed
Y bendice la cosecha / Bless the harvest
Bendice el santo fruto / Bless the holy product
De esta buena tierra / Of this good earth

Bendícenos con lluvia / Bless us with rain
Y bendícenos la siembra / Bless our crops
Bendícenos la agüita / Bless the precious water
Que corre en la acequia / That runs down the acequias

San Ysidro Labrador / St. Isidore the Laborer
Ysidro Labrador / Isidore the Laborer
De esta buena siembra / Of this good crop
Tú eres el patrón / You are in charge
